U.S. Mint Marks 9/11 Anniversary on 2026 Half Dollar

In 2026, the United States marks two profound anniversaries: its 250th birthday, or Semiquincentennial, and 25 years since the attacks of September 11, 2001. The U.S. Mint is observing this convergence of history with a special half dollar, the 2026 9/11 Enduring Liberty Half Dollar.
This coin represents a significant departure from the familiar Kennedy design. For one year only, Lady Liberty returns to the half dollar for the first time since the Walking Liberty series ended in 1947. The obverse, designed by Donna Weaver, features a close-up of Liberty's determined, forward-looking gaze. The dual date "1776 ~ 2026" firmly plants the coin in the context of the nation's Semiquincentennial.
The reverse, designed by Beth Zaiken, depicts one generation passing Liberty's torch to another. It also carries an inscription from James Madison: "KNOWLEDGE IS THE ONLY GUARDIAN OF TRUE LIBERTY." This theme of passing on memory and responsibility is central to the coin's purpose.
A Tale of Two Privy Marks
For collectors, one of the most compelling details of this issue is the use of two different privy marks. The publicly available coins, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, feature a mark with the date "9-11-01" surrounded by the words "NEVER FORGET." These circulating-quality coins are being sold directly to the public in rolls and bags.
However, a separate, special issue was struck at the West Point Mint. These 2,983 coins were presented to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York. The number corresponds exactly to the 2,977 victims of the 9/11 attacks and the six victims of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. These presentation pieces carry a different privy mark: "9-11-01" surrounded by "ALWAYS REMEMBER." This distinction creates an immediate and historically significant rarity within the series.
A One-Year Commemorative
The Enduring Liberty design is legislated for 2026 only, authorized by the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020. After this one-year issue, the Kennedy portrait is set to return to the half dollar in 2027. This limited timeframe ensures the Enduring Liberty Half Dollar, in all its variations, will remain a unique chapter in U.S. coinage.
